Two Person Drill Team Pattern

I recently made this drill team pattern for two of my riders. They performed it in the Fun Show and it looked great so I thought I’d share, since I couldn’t find any two person drill team patterns out in internet land. Feel free to use it!

Things to teach for drill team:

  • how to rate your horse’s speed
  • how to use rating your horse’s speed to stay even with a partner’s horse – in drill team use shoulder to shoulder, because this looks nicer and more even than head to head, since horse’s have various length necks
  • how to do the individual parts of the pattern before putting them altogether with a partner
    • trot across the diagonal
    • circles of various sizes
    • ride down the centerline and circle at X all the way to the rail and back
    • ride the hourglass shape
    • reverse directions on the centerline
    • how to halt square
    • how to salute

P.S. Sorry I don’t know any of the official names of these maneuvers! I couldn’t find them and/or made them up.

  1. This is fantastic! I have several classes where both riders are advanced enough to ride a drill team pattern, but are physically unable to go faster than a trot. I plan to adapt this to their riding level- thank you!

  2. I know you posted this a while ago but my friend and I are planning on doing this at a lope/gallop. We are trying to pick a song/create one and we were wondering how long it took at a trot, we can just chop that time in half and that would be how long we need our song. (We can’t go out and practice to see how long it would take right now for personal reasons, we would like to still be getting things done)

    • Hi, I’m sorry it’s taken a while to respond to your comment, I had a newborn. I’m excited you are planning to do this! We actually only did this routine at the walk and it was so long ago I can’t remember how long it took…I think it took up a whole 4 minute song? So I’m afraid I’m not much help, I’m sorry! Best of luck to you, though!
