Ring Stretches + A Good Example of Teaching

I have a video to share with you today!

First, this video is a good example of a stretching activity using rings. The ring exercise is an easy one you can use during warm up to work on stretching, core muscle strengthening, and motor planning.

Second, it is a good example of an instructor working with a student. The instructor’s example is one to take note of:

  • she demonstrates good presence
  • she is confident and kind
  • she is aware of what is going on with the student, sidewalker, and leader at all times
  • she is in control and has a plan
  • she gives both encouragement and correction to the rider, the sidewalker, and leader. Notice how she addresses the helper when she wants a bigger stretch from the student, and how she addresses the situation when the horse starts to scratch its head on its leg!

Note that this exercise is done here at the halt, but it can also be done at the walk. At my certification workshop we were told that in most cases it is preferred to keep the horse moving because if it’s standing still then the student is not getting the benefit of the horse’s movement. However, it depends on the student and your goals, so whichever you choose, just have a good reason for it!

Enjoy!
